Bear Bryant

Are you playing by Bear Bryant’s 3 Rules?

While reading the book Bear Bryant, CEO, I came across the following quote:

“If you want to coach you have three rules to follow to win. One, surround yourself with people who can’t live without football. I’ve had a lot of them. Two, be able to recognize winners. They come in all forms. And, three, have a plan for everything. A plan for practice, a plan for the game. A plan for being ahead, and a plan for being behind 20-0 at half, with your quarterback hurt and the phones dead, with it raining cats and dogs and no rain gear because the equipment man left it at home.” – Paul “Bear” Bryant

Are you playing by these rules in your business?

Who do you surround yourself with? Who are you top employees? Are they committed to your business? Are they committed to making your business win? Do you have a mastermind group outside of your business? Attorneys, business coaches, accountants? The lesson, all of these should be people who are fully committed to making your business succeed. The more obsessed they are with helping your business succeed, the better.

This leads into the second rule, be able to recognize winners. When you are hiring employees or interviewing potential members of your mastermind group, can you recognize a winner from someone who just gets by – or worse, who drags other employees (and your business) down with them.

And the third rule, have a plan! You should have a detailed plan for your business. The reason for this is so that you make better decisions. Studies show that if you sit down and make a detailed plan, you will make better business decisions. The physical act of sitting down and writing out a plan makes you think of scenarios that may occur. Many of these scenarios may never happen. If they do happen, you will be well prepared to make the best business decisions. Without sitting down and writing out a plan, you may not have even thought of the scenario until it has happened – thus leaving you ill prepared to make quality decisions.

Follow these three rules, in your business and you will begin to see some of the success that Bear Bryant achieved during his illustrious coaching career.
